What is Falun Gong?

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a traditional Chinese qigong practice. It uses gentle movements and meditation to cultivate the body, mind, and spirit. Due to the tremendous benefits it can bring to practitioners, Falun Gong has grown to be the most popular qigong system in the world

Falun Gong is a complete and powerful system, which consists of five simple exercises, which can be performed by anyone regardless of age, physical condition, or prior experience. The exercises create internal harmony, thus increasing one’s energy and eliminating stress.

Falun Gong is based on the principles of Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance. Practitioners learn to let go of negative thoughts and behaviors, and to view all conflicts not as difficulties but as opportunities to grow.

A proven system of self-development

Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, is a very ancient and very powerful Qigong (exercise and meditation) system. It was first introduced to the public in 1992; prior to that, it was only passed down from one teacher to one disciple. Since being made public, Falun Gong has helped over 100 million people in over 50 countries improve their health, purify their minds, uplift their spirits, and deepen their understanding of life, humanity, and the universe. Falun Gong is most accurately described as “cultivation practice” divided into two separate parts, “practice” and “cultivation”.

What is “Practice”?
The practice involves five simple and gentle exercises; four are standing exercises while one is a sitting meditation. These exercises energize the body and improve the function of both body and mind, giving practitioners a feeling of peace and well-being. The exercises can be learned easily by anyone of any age; no special ability or prior experience is needed.

What is “Cultivation”?
Practitioners cultivate their minds, bodies, and spirits by incorporating the fundamental principle of the universe- Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance- into their daily lives. This principle is the highest standard and requirement of the practice. It is a guide to help people build stronger morals and virtues so they can live with less stress, more kindness, and more peace in their everyday lives. Specific applications of this principle are discussed in the book Zhuan Falun and other writings, which guide practitioners’ growth and development.
Falun Gong emphasizes the cultivation of one’s heart in daily life, with independent thinking and a clear awareness of one’s consciousness in all situations. It teaches that a practitioner should always look inside for self-improvement when faced with conflicts with others and strive to be a better person in all situations and environments. Falun Gong practitioners lead normal lives, maintaining jobs, families, and personal property in society; at the same time, practitioners are taught not to let the pursuit of wealth, popular opinion, or competition for social standing control their lives.

Falun Gong is not a religion, although it shares some terminology and concepts with the Buddhist and Taoist religions. Falun Gong does not have any religious rituals or formalities of worship. Nor is Falun Gong in any way political. Falun Gong is also not a business. Volunteers provide all classes free of charge, and all reading materials are available on the Internet, also free of charge. There are no membership fees, no regular organization or hierarchy. Falun Gong practitioners are regular people who share the desire to improve themselves using this powerful, proven system of cultivation and self-development.
